The Trustees of Kiran Vocational Centre (KVC), a care and therapy centre for mentally challenged and physically disabled children and adolescents, invited the members of RCKSM to the inaugural ceremony of their newly constructed school in Baldia Town, Karachi, on Dec. 19th, 2009.

KVC, run by Project Officer Brother Yunis Walter and Directress Imrana Sohail, was first located in Gulshan-e-Iqbal in rented premises. Thanks to a generous donation from a private donor, Mr. Iqbal Amirali Shalvani, for the land and construction cost, KVC has been able to build its own school.

The Rotary Club of Karachi Sunset Millennium (RCKSM) with the support of District Governor, Rtn. Usman Masud Khan, and its international partner Rotary Club of Delhi Chanakyapuri, India, has taken on this project for 2009-2010. Under this project, RCKSM will be providing new furnishings, and educational and therapy equipment for the children, while also providing a van for the transportation of these children. According to Brother Yunis, the biggest cause of low attendance at school is transportation. Many of the parents, all from underprivileged communities, cannot afford paying for public transportation; as a result the children are not sent to school on regular bases.

At the inaugural event, the children of KVC presented a very colourful evening of songs for the guest and the parents, and presented rose garlands to all the members of RCKSM. Later, the building was inaugurated by Mr. Shalvani’s granddaughter Jody, and at the end of the evening RCKSM distributed Christmas gifts, sweets bags and caps to all the children.
