SNID on 14 – 16 December 2009

Dear Rotary Presidents,

The World Health Organization’s report on the AFP Weekly Surveillance Update for Week 48 (Ended on Dec 05, 2009) clearly indicates that to-date in 2009, Pakistan has reported a total of 82 confirmed polio cases in 31 district/agencies/towns, including 57 type-1, 24 type-3 cases and one case that is a mixture of both serotypes (1 and 3).

Professor Rashid Jooma, Director General, Ministry of Health chaired the National EPI/Polio Committee meeting on the last day, highlighting that no wild poliovirus type-1 isolated from sewage samples were found from Karachi or Lahore in the last 3 months (last positive sample 12 August). However, continued isolation of wild poliovirus type-3 from sewage samples of Karachi is a concern. There have been no polio cases for over 3 months from Sindh province (last case was wild poliovirus type-3 with onset of paralysis on 24 August).

Our endeavor to eradicate polio in Pakistan would be possible if I have your continued support in building awareness through social mobilization. The SNID’s
scheduled on 14-16 December 2009 provides us the perfect opportunity to disseminate information and promotional material in the form of pencils, caps, stickers, badges, T-shirts, bags and story books on polio in English & Urdu, all of which are available with my office.

Please confirm any activity update for us to prepare additional social mobilization items in advance, if the need arises.

Kind Regards
PDG Aziz Memon
Chair: Pakistan National Polio Plus Committee
